To ensure the highest quality of veterinary medicine in Europe by specialization for better quality of life of animals and people.

To be recognised as the most trusted veterinary specialty certification organization in Europe.


About us

The Organisation is committed to leading and promoting veterinary specialist professional training and certification in Europe to advance animal health and wellbeing and public health.

The EBVS is the umbrella organization for veterinary specialties within Europe.

European veterinary specialists are highly trained in various disciplines, including anesthesia and analgesia, companion and equine internal medicine, dermatology, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, neurology, ophthalmology, sports medicine, surgery, reproduction, animal welfare and behavior, public health, aquatic animal health, bovine, porcine, small ruminant health management, poultry veterinary science, zoological medicine, laboratory animal medicine, microbiology, clinical pathology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, parasitology and comparative nutrition.


EBVS structure

  • 27 veterinary specialist Colleges, representing over 38 distinct specialties
  • comprising more than 4000 EBVS® European Veterinary Specialists.
  • EBVS is led by an elected five-member Executive Committee, supported by the EBVS staff (chief executive officer and secretariat).
  • In addition to an Executive committee, EBVS has several committees.
  • Each EBVS-recognized veterinary specialist College has one voting representative.
  • The EBVS meets and makes crucial decisions twice yearly during the Annual General Meetings.

The role of EBVS

  • Defining guidelines for recognition and registration of veterinary specialists in Europe.
  • Recognizing and monitoring veterinary specialty Colleges in Europe.
  • Awarding the title of 'EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in (name of specialty)' for 5 years to specialists who meet their College's criteria, with re-evaluation every 5 years.
  • Maintaining a register of EBVS® European Veterinary Specialists.
  • Assuring the quality of specialists by monitoring all its Colleges.
  • Providing information on European veterinary specialization to authorities, private organizations, veterinarians, and animal owners.
  • Encouraging and promoting the availability and utilization of specialty services for the public and veterinary profession.
