Who is a veterinary specialst?

A veterinary specialist is a vet who is an expert in a specific area. Currently, there are over 4,000 specialists known as European Veterinary Specialists®. These vets have completed an additional intensive 3-6 years training program, called a residency, to acquire in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialty. Your primary care or first opinion vet, can refer you to one of these specialists if needed.

The Role of European Veterinary Specialists®

The European Veterinary Specialists®, under the umbrella of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS), are dedicated to providing high-quality services across 27 veterinary specialty colleges. These experts cover a wide range of topics, species, and disciplines in veterinary medicine, including animal health and welfare, public health, food safety and food security.

Services Offered by European Veterinary Specialists

European Veterinary Specialists are available for consultations, typically via referrals from other veterinarians, providing clinical services for pets, horses, other equines, and farm animals. They also offer health management services for various farm animal species.
