Dr. Pietro Filippo Adamo graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1986 and has been a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology since 1997. Soon after graduation, Dr. Adamo moved to the USA at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where from 1988 to 1991, completed an Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and started a residency in veterinary neurology, which was later completed in 1997 at the University of Bern (Switzerland). In 1991, Dr. Adamo returned to his hometown (Rome, Italy), where he opened the first Veterinary Neurology/Neurosurgical Referral Practice (“Villa San Francesco – Neurology Veterinary Center”), which installed the first “in house” Computed Tomography (CT) scan for veterinary patients. In 2002, Dr. Adamo moved back to the USA to accept the position of Clinical Assistant Professor in Neurology/Neurosurgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin, Madison-WI, which he served from 2002 until 2007. He has since moved with his family to California, where he first served as Chief of Neurology at the Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro (2007 -2009), before founding the Bay Area Veterinary Neurology/Neurosurgery Consulting (Bay Area VNC) in 2009, through which he provides veterinary consultations in the Bay Area. From 2009 to 2018, Dr. Adamo has also been the Chief of Neurology at the East Bay Area Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Walnut Creek, California. In 2013, Dr. Adamo designed and patented the first Intervertebral Disc Prosthesis (Adamo Spinal Disc™) for the cervical spine in dog (Patent. No US 8,496,707 B2), as well as the necessary surgical tools (Patent. No US 8,491,655 B2), to perform the surgical technique he developed. In the same year, Dr. Adamo founded Applied Veterinary Technology, LLC, for the marketing and distribution of the Adamo Spinal Disc™. During his Academic career, Dr. Adamo developed an alternative medical treatment for granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME), designed a frameless guided stereotactic CT brain biopsy, investigated alternative medical therapy for brain meningioma in dogs and cats and most recently, developed the first artificial disc implantation for the canine cervical spine for the treatment of Disc Associated Wobbler Syndrome. Dr. Adamo has lectured and published extensively in the United States and Europe. His main area of interest is cervical spinal surgery, and he continues to conduct research on artificial cervical disc implantation in dogs suffering from Wobbler Syndrome. Dr. Adamo, when he manages some free time, he enjoys surfing, skiing, playing soccer, and spending time with their new rescue dog Erica and cat Pancito.
