European Medicines Agency (EMA), through European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC), monitors sales of veterinary antimicrobials to promote their prudent use in animals.

Data are vital for tackling antimicrobial resistance in order to:

  • Promote responsible use of antibiotics in Europe
  • Inform experts, policymakers, and citizens
  • Empower countries to take action

In the recently published report of veterinary antimicrobial agents in 31 European countries from 2021 to 2022, there was a 53% drop in sales of veterinary antibiotics which shows a great response from veterinary professionals to more judicious antibiotic use and consequently lower risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals and people.
