Professor for “Herd Management with Focus on Digital Health Monitoring in Farm Animals"

The Department for Farm Animals and Veterinary Public Health seeks to appoint a Professor for “Herd Management with Focus on Digital Health Monitoring in Farm Animals” in accordance with the appointment procedure for university professors established by § 98 of the Austrian Universities Act 2002.

Field of activity
The core purpose of this role is the representation and further development of the subject of Herd Management with Focus on Digital Health Monitoring in Farm Animals in research and teaching. Establishing a distinct, internationally recognised research focus in the field is considered particularly important, as is encouraging and promoting young researchers. State- of-the-art research facilities, among others in the field of digital animal monitoring technologies, and outstanding opportunities for teaching and research are available with a view to achieving this aim.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an own independent research programme. Sufficient external funding for the own research is required. The aim is to develop and shape a research profile in the field of health monitoring and health maintenance of livestock using new digital methods. The professorship is engaged in the development and validation of sensor based read-out systems and contributes profound expertise in the field of data management and data interpretation for veterinary medical issues. It maintains close collaboration with the veterinary community to prepare and support the application of these technical innovations in agricultural practices and in veterinary herd management.

This professorship is affiliated with the Department for Farm Animals and Veterinary Public Health, where it actively networks with expertise in the livestock sector and related fields. Within the newly planned Center for Veterinary System Transformation, it encompasses a broad range of "big data"-driven innovations in livestock management and collaborates interdisciplinary with the Precision Livestock Hub, as well as the E-Health Group of the Veterinary University, and technology-oriented partners.

 

In teaching, the successful candidate will coordinate and perform teaching and supervisory tasks in the Diploma Programme in Veterinary Medicine and will be responsible for the master’s programme Digitization in Animal Health Management – Precision Animal Health, which will start for the first time in the winter semester 2023/2024. Furthermore, she or he will perform teaching and supervisory tasks in the Bachelor/Master Programmes in Biomedical Sciences, as well as in postgraduate scientific training.
The job holder's responsibilities will also include working with university bodies and participation in national and international expert committees. Once appointed, the professor will also be expected to promote joint work within the department, with the university clinics, and with other internal and external facilities.


Required education, qualifications and experience

  • Completed studies in veterinary medicine or agricultural science or natural sciences
  • Completed relevant Doctorate / PhD or comparable scientific qualifications with a focus on herd management, specifically in digital health monitoring in livestock
  • Evidence of excellent research in the field of digital data generation and management as well as transformation of knowledge into livestock assets
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting livestock-related digital data clusters
  • Outstanding publication track record in line with the career level
  • Evidence of having successfully obtained funding from domestic and international funding providers, and of having led projects conducted using those fundings
  • Teaching qualifications and experience in supervising and training undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Proven experience in working collaboratively in translational teams and an international, interdisciplinary professional network
  • Proven commitment to knowledge transfer to relevant national and international stakeholders (e.g. veterinary professionals, ministries, technology providers)
  • Good command of English (B2)

Minimum salary
The minimum salary according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff is EUR 5,826.50 gross per month (14 monthly salaries). A higher salary may be agreed during the appointment negotiations.
