Antonio Camarda, graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Bari, is Specialist in Avian Technology and Diseases and Diplomate at the European College of Poultry Veterinary Sciences (ECPVS). Full professor of Avian Diseases at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Bari, he teaches in the degree course of Veterinary Medicine and in several post-graduate schools in the field of veterinary medicine. He also leads the Avian Disease unit of the same Department. Member of the crisis unit for Avian Influence of the Apulia Region and of the Regional Epidemiological Monitoring Unit of Apulia, since 2010 to 2016 he has been president of the Italian branch of the World Rabbit Science Association, and currently he is sanitary manager of the Wildlife Monitoring Centre of the Apulia Region. His research activities are mainly focused on epidemiology, control and prophylaxis of some infectious disease of poultry, wild birds and rabbits. Among others, he contributed to the development of a vaccine for the control of Fowl Typhoid in poultry, by assessing its safety and efficacy in field and to evidence the transmission of the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus from rabbit to hare. In the last twelve years, he paid great attention to the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae, in particular to establish its role in the transmission of infectious diseases among birds, and to ascertain the efficacy of different drugs in the control of infestation in poultry farms. He was MC member for Italy and of the COST Action FA1404 - Improving current understanding and research for sustainable control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae (COREMI). Within COREMI, since 2014 to June 2016 he has been leader of the Working Group 4, targeted on epidemiology, pathology, geographical mapping and surveillance tools.
