The European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS®) is the umbrella organisation of European Veterinary Specialisation. It ensures high-level consistency and quality assurance among the member colleges, which are responsible for the validation of veterinary specialists. There are currently 27 EBVS® fully recognised veterinary specialist colleges covering 39 specialist disciplines. In 2026, a new college was awarded provisional recognition by the EBVS board.
The EBVS Board is formed of representatives from each college, who are responsible for overseeing the bylaws, policies and procedures of EBVS, which dictate how each college operates and validates specialisation. The Board ensures quality across colleges through a process of five-year revalidation of colleges' activities. While the colleges ensure the quality of veterinary specialists through five-year recertification of Diplomates. The Board also sets the strategic operations of EBVS and considers applications for colleges for provisional recognition. Once provisionally recognised, colleges develop their procedures to achieve full recognition over not more than 10 years.
