Alessandra Piccirillo received her veterinary degree from the University of Naples in 1994 and soon after was licensed to practice veterinary medicine. In 1998, she was awarded a PhD on “Pathology of bird, rabbit and game species” by the same University. In 1999, she became a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Naples. She spent a year as visiting research scientist at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (UK) and afterward as research scientist at the IZSLER, Brescia (Italy). In 2002, she joined the University of Padua as Assistant Professor first and then as Associate Professor (since 2018) in Infectious Diseases of Domestic Animals, where she became lecturer of Avian Pathology. In 2008, she was awarded a Specialization Diploma in “Technology and Pathology of avian, rabbit and game species” from the University of Milan.
Alessandra’s research interests include studies on infectious diseases of poultry and other birds (backyard, companion and wild birds), with special attention on bacterial infections caused by zoonotic (i.e. Campylobacter spp.) and pathogenic microorganisms (i.e. Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli), and their antimicrobial resistance. She is member of Italian branch of WVPA (served as secretary from 2010 to 2013), the Italian branch of WPSA and the Italian branch of WRSA. From 2012 to 2017, she was member of the Veterinary Council of Padua. She is author or co-author of about 150 scientific papers published on national or international scientific journals and proceedings of scientific meetings, as well as writing book chapters and translations of books.
