Janny graduated as a DVM from Utrecht University in 2007, after which she performed a PhD project on the interplay between synovial inflammation, pain and tissue breakdown in equine joint disease. She defended her PhD thesis on equine joint homeostasis cum laude in 2010. After a period working as a post-doctoral researcher on translational studies of osteoarthritis pain, Janny took up an anaesthesia internship followed by a residency in veterinary anaesthesiology at Utrecht University. She became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2016. As an assistant professor of clinical anaesthesia at the Utrecht University equine and small animal clinics, she combined lecturing with clinical tasks in the small animal and equine theatres and in equine intensive care. In 2022, she became a senior lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the Royal Veterinary College in London. Following a move back to the Netherlands for family reasons, she remains affiliated with the RVC as an honorary senior lecturer, while from 2025 she became head of discipline for Evidensia NL, working at various referral hospitals in the Netherlands. Janny has broad experience in anaesthesia and pain control for multiple species, including equine, farm animal, zoo animal and exotic species. She has a special research interest in chronic (orthopaedic) pain as well as in ethical and practical aspects of analgesia in large (experimental) animals; she is the recipient of five external research grants in these subject areas. In addition, Janny has a passion for teaching and clinical supervision, and she was awarded the 2021 Lecturer of the Year Award by Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
