Dr. Vilhelmiina HUUSKONEN

EBVS® European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia
Vilhelmiina is a board-certified veterinary anaesthesiologist who completed her European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia (ECVAA) residency at University College Dublin (UCD). She also holds a PhD in veterinary pharmacology from Helsinki University, Finland. Currently, she serves as Associate Professor and Discipline Leader in Veterinary Anaesthesia at the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine. As an academic clinician at the UCD Veterinary Hospital, Vilhelmiina oversees the veterinary anaesthesia department, ensuring patient safety and attentive care during anaesthetic procedures. She also supervises professional doctorate (DVMS) students and veterinary anaesthesia residents, and teaches undergraduate veterinary students. A highlight of her clinical work is anaesthetising animals at Dublin Zoo, which she considers a favourite part of her role. Vilhelmiina’s professional interests focus on the anaesthesia of critically ill patients, including large and small animals, as well as giraffes. She is a member of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists (AVA) and the ECVAA, where she chairs the Credentials Committee. She also actively contributes to UCD academic and institutional committees. Her current research explores the cardiovascular, respiratory, and analgesic effects of the novel peripheral alpha-2 antagonist vatinoxan in dogs and sheep, the development of new local anaesthesia techniques in dogs and goats, and field anaesthesia in wild foxes.
