Brian received his DVM degree from the University of California at Davis in 1983. ECAMS certification was received in 1999, and ECZM certification when ECAMS was expanded. Certification in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners was received in 1996 in avian practice. He is in private practice in northern California and director of the Medical Center for Birds, which is an avian-species exclusive practice. He is the Co-author of The Large Macaws: Their Care, Conservation and Management (1995), Co-author of Birds for Dummies (1999), editor of Current Veterinary Therapy in Avian Medicine and Surgery (2015), Co-author of Birds for Dummies, Second edition (2021), and Co-editor of Current Veterinary Therapy in Avian Medicine and Surgery, Volume 2 (ds).
