Martine is Head of the Veterinary Department of ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo and graduated at Utrecht University in 2001. She first worked in general animal practices, including a referral hospital, and completed an MSc in Wild Animal Health at the University of London with a research project about Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. infections in free-roaming western lowland gorillas in 2006. She continued her work in non-human primate medicine for ZSL in Gabon and in a great ape rescue center in Cameroon. From 2008 until 2013 she worked as a fulltime veterinarian for captive and free-roaming wildlife in South Africa. Besides being in charge of the veterinary work in private wildlife reserves, ranches, zoos, rehabilitation- and breeding centers, she was responsible for the Chemical Immobilization Courses at WildlifeVets.com. She started her current positions in the Netherlands in 2013. Martine lectures at various institutions, was co-promotor at Ghent University and thoroughly enjoys the combination of clinical veterinary work, research and education.
