Romain is a past president of the British Veterinary Zoological Society, the professional association representing zoo and wildlife veterinarians in the UK, as well as a past president of the Scottish branch of the British Veterinary Association. He is a trustee of Chester Zoo, and a trustee of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA), and is a past trustee of the Animal Welfare Foundation. He was been honorary assistant professor in zoo and wildlife medicine at the University of Nottingham for 15 years, was previously head of pathology at the Zoological Society of London, specialist veterinary surgeon at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland for a decade, and provided the veterinary service at the Scottish national wildlife rescue centre for 18 years.
Romain is an international expert in wildlife surgery, having pioneered numerous world first wildlife operations, from the first keyhole surgical removals of diseased gallbladders in moon bears rescued from illegal bile farms in Vietnam, to the first robotic-assisted surgery on a wild animal, a tiger. He was elected an honorary life member of the human surgeons Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSBGI), for his work on minimally invasive surgery in animals, as well as being awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for his pioneering work. His world-leading wildlife surgery work was featured in the 100th anniversary issue of WIRED magazine (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/romain-pizzi-veterinary-surgeon-edinburgh-zoo-wild-animals), the Guardian, and other print media, and on TV on the BBC, National Geographic, and CNN. His book “Exotic Vetting” was published by Harper Collins in March 2022.
He is veterinary advisor to Free The Bears centres in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, veterinay advisor to the Beaver Trust, a director of Rewilding Medicine, and a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Wildlife Health Specialist Group (WHSG). He is a Secretary of States Appointed Zoo license inspector, and sits on the UK government department for environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA) Animal Welfare Committee.
He is currently active in international conservation projects in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, working with conservation medicine, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, with a strong focus on capacity building of local veterinarians and skills, to ensure long-term sustainability of in-country conservation projects. His species experience ranges from tree snails, to orangutans; sun bears to elephants. He still also regularly performs specialist surgery for a number of zoos and wildlife centres in the UK, as well as internationally. He has published and presented over 200 scientific articles, and has written the book "Exotic Vetting" commissioned by Harper-Collins on wildlife veterinary medicine for the general public, and published in 2022 (https://amzn.eu/d/9Tw7xmC )
