Dr. Elin Hernlund
Sweden
EBVS® European Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation
Elin is an Associate Professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, where she heads the clinical animal locomotion laboratory and co-leads a research group with Professor Marie Rhodin. Their research team specializes in biomechanics and pain behavior, developing digital tools for early detection of orthopedic diseases in horses and cattle.
After graduating as a veterinarian from SLU in 2008, Elin has dedicated her career to biomechanics research and equine practice. She defended her thesis on sport surfaces for show jumping in 2016, which led to the development of objective testing standards for international FEI competition surfaces. Her subsequent equine research has encompassed lameness detection, the relationship between lameness and laterality, visual perception of lameness, detailed patterns of hindlimb lameness, and horse-rider interaction dynamics. Her fascination with the complexity of motion patterns has driven her to explore novel AI methodologies for motion analysis. Through collaborations with engineers at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen, KTH in Stockholm and UC Davis she has investigated how artificial intelligence can enhance diagnostic capabilities for animal lameness.
In 2020, Elin co-founded Sleip. This innovative company has developed a smartphone application for equine gait analysis, which is currently utilized by many veterinary practices worldwide.
