Professor in production animal population medicine and European Board Specialist (EBVS) in animal welfare science, ethics and law (AWSEL). Nick graduated from the University of Cambridge, UK in 1999. He worked in large animal practice in the UK, including a spell as a director of a practice and dairy consultant. He completed a PhD on lameness control programmes in dairy herds at the University of Bristol in 2006. He spent 4 years working as a research fellow at Bristol where he worked on the Healthy Feet Project, then working as a lecturer/senior lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College, based at a field station in the south (Dorset) where he ran tracking rotations on production animal medicine and population medicine. In 2016 Nick returned to full time dairy welfare consulting, retaining a research interest through an honorary associate professorship at the University of Nottingham. During the subsequent 8 years he worked on the Healthy Feet Programme, Cattle Hoofcare Standards Board developing industry qualifications in cattle lameness /hoof trimming, the register of mobility scorers (RoMS) plus also various retailer/processor initiatives, as well as expanding his farmer client work. In 2025 Nick moved his family to Western Australia where he will continue his interests in research, teaching, herd health, welfare and productivity consulting, cattle foot health and farmer skills training.
