Anouck Haverbeke graduated as a veterinarian from Ghent University (Belgium) in 2001. As part of her veterinary training, she completed her thesis on equine welfare at Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). She obtained her PhD in Ethology from the University of Namur (Belgium) in 2009, where her research demonstrated the positive impact of reward-based training on the welfare and performance of military working dogs. Since 2013, Anouck has been a European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM-BM). She was appointed Professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine at Ghent University in 2021, where she combines teaching, clinical work, and research. She currently serves as Past Vice President of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) and Past President of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM). Alongside her academic appointment, Anouck runs a referral practice dedicated to veterinary behavioural medicine. She teaches extensively in Belgium and internationally, delivering lectures and continuing education programmes on animal behaviour, animal welfare, and the human–animal bond. Her research focuses on evidence-based approaches to improving animal welfare and behavioural health. Current interests include neuromodulation in veterinary behavioural medicine, olfactory enrichment, the welfare effects of training methods in dogs and horses, housing conditions and welfare in horses, and grief and attachment in dogs.
