Ms Valerie JONCKHEER-SHEEHY
Netherlands
I am an EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law, with over 20 years of experience in veterinary practice and 10 years as a diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, holding credentials in both the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law (AWSEL) and Behavioural Medicine (BM) subspecialties. From 2015 to 2025, I focused my specialist work on Behavioural Medicine—particularly the management of pathological behaviour in companion animals and horses—while also conducting welfare assessments across farm, zoo, and laboratory species. My work has encompassed clinical care, education, research, and expert witness roles in the Dutch courts, alongside extensive voluntary efforts to promote behavioural medicine, animal welfare science, and ethics within the profession and wider public. Now specialising in AWSEL, my work centres on the intersection of climate mitigation, sustainable food systems, and animal welfare. Global reduction in livestock numbers is essential, as is the ethical and science-based management of animals within sustainable, welfare-friendly systems, investment in alternative protein innovation, and the advancement of regenerative and conservation agriculture.
