Prof. Jaime GOMEZ-LAGUNA
Spain
EBVS® European Specialist in Veterinary Microbiology
My research career is marked by a broad interest in deciphering the immunopathology of major viral and bacterial diseases of livestock. My career started in 2003 as undergraduate student awarded a Fellowship from Research Initiation Program of University of Cordoba (UCO) and with a pre- graduate 3 month-stay at University of Helsinki. I obtained my Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2004 at UCO. From 2005 to 2009 I was awarded with a competitive PhD Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (FPU). In 2005, I defended my End of Course Project (ECP) focused on apoptosis phenomena in PRRS (TBED; ranking:2/129;IF:3.12), as researcher of the international project FONDECYT-1020217. Then, I did a post-graduate stay at TiHo Hannover, supervised by Dr. W. Baumgärtner, to improve my skills in pathology. In 2007, I did a 1-month stay at CISA-INIA (Madrid) and a 2.5 months-stay at Ghent University (Belgium), supervised by Dr. K. Van Reeth, to be trained in cytokines bioassays and their implementation in the studies of my PhD Thesis which led to a publication in CIMID (ranking:2/145;IF:3.61). In 2007 I did a Master on Porcine Farming from Murcia University (UM), with my Master Thesis on “Molecular diagnosis of tuberculosis-like lesions in pigs” being published in JVDI (Q1). In 2009 I did a short stay at CReSA (Barcelona) with Dr. E. Mateu, and then I defended my PhD Thesis (European mention) at UCO, with “Cum Laude” qualification and the Special Doctorate Award (SDA), which dissected the immunopathogenesis of the respiratory form of PRRSV. I was post-doc researcher at UCO from 2009 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015 I was Responsible for Primary Production Research at CICAP – Food Research Centre coordinating research projects with the industry focused on animal health and management. In 2013, I did a guest post-doc stay at University of Concepcion (Chile). Awarded with the José Castillejo Mobility Fellowship I performed a 3-month post-doc research stay at University of Surrey (UK), supervised by Dr. R. La Ragione (2015), working on the analysis of antimicrobial peptides of interest from lactic acid bacteria. In January 2016 I returned to the University of Córdoba as “Ramon y Cajal” Post-doctoral Fellow. In 2020 I obtained the I3 Research accreditation, in 2021 I incorporated as Associate Professor at UCO and in 2025 I gained a Full Professor position. During this time, I have carried out several research stays at international institutions of well-known prestige, namely Pasteur Institute (Paris, France) supervised by Dr. J. Pizarro-Cerdá (2017), Institute Peter Doherty (Melbourne, Australia) supervised by Dr. K. Kedzierska (2018), University of Montreal (Montreal, Canada) supervised by Dr. C.A. Gagnon (2019), and University of Kagoshima (Japan), supervised by Dr. M. Ozawa (2025), which allowed me to widen my lab skills as well as to increase my international network. From 2022, I am ViceDean of Internationalisation and Scientific Communication at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at UCO. I have participated in 22 national (PI and/or Coordinator in 16 of them) and 8 international (1 EUPAHW Partnership; 1 COST Action; 2 funded by FP7, KBBE and NADIR calls; 2 funded by FONDECYT, Chile; 1 funded by EUROSTARS call, being the coordinator; 1 funded by UFP, Brasil) competitive research projects. I have participated in 17 R&D contracts with the private industry (2 awarded as the best Research in the Agrifood Area), being PI in 10 of them. Co-author of 178 scientific publications (105 peer-review papers, 66 articles of general interest, 4 books and 5 chapters of book; h-index = 22). First, last or corresponding author in 51/105 peer-review papers, 81/105 published in journals from Q1 with 38/105 published in D1 journals, and 41/105 with co-authors from foreign institutions. Co-author of a monographic published in the journal SUIS awarded as the best article of the year. Co-author of more than two hundred communications in national and international meetings. Invited speaker in 18 national and 4 international workshops. Supervisor of 9 PhD Theses (2 of them awarded with the SDA, and 1 awarded as the “Best PhD Thesis in Animal Health” by SYVA Laboratories in 2023), 10 ECP and 10 Master Theses on pig pathogens. Member of the Editorial Boards of Frontiers in Veterinary Science and Pathogens. Scientific Reviewer for the EC (COST Actions) (2025), ANEP (2018 - to date), EC (H2020) (2014), NSC – Poland (2014-2017), Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (Canada) (2013) and the National Pork Board “PRRS Call for Research” (USA) (2012-2017) and for more than 20 peer- review journals. Accredited for Laboratory Animal Housing Facilities. During all this time my research career has been characterised by a continuous combination of basic and applied research, together with a wide spectrum of formation activities for pre- and post- graduate students. I have organized several Workshops focused on porcine immunology and diagnostics (funded by ceiA3), I have been the academic director of the Campus INNOVACTION COVAP (2020 to 2024) as well as an invited speaker of the Workshop on R&D Projects Management (Fundecor, 2017-2024). In addition, I am the Principal Investigator of several public-private competitive research proposals as well as research contracts with the industry, which highlights a profound transfer activity of the gained know-how to the private sector and, finally, to the society.
