I graduated from Onderstepoort in 1982, and worked as a State Vet in Vryheid, South Africa until end 1984. From there she went to Texas A&M and received an MS in Vet Physiology working on laminitis. She then worked in a racepractice on the East Rand until 1988. From there she went on to qualify as a large animal surgeon at Onderstepoort in 1992. She worked here as an associate professor in Equine Surgery until the early 2000s when she decided colic surgery at 2 am was no more for her and decided to become a radiologist. She received her MMedVet in Diagnostic Imaging in 2008 and her ECVDI credentials in 2007. She was head of the section Diagnostic Imaging in 2013 and received her PhD (MRI of equine cartilage) in the same year. In 2014 she went into semi-retirement but gave online post-graduate lectures in Equine DI to radiology residents and private practitioners for CPD. This online course developed into a weekly international equine DI rounds for MMedVet , ECVDI and other interested practitioners, which is now headed by another ECVDI diplomate. From 2019-2024 Ann and her husband moved to Australia where she lectured DI to Veterinary students at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, and assisted equine graduate students with their studies. In 2025 they returned to South Africa. She is now retired, although she still co-promotes a few residents and post-grad students as an emeritus professor, and is co-promoting 3 ongoing research projects. She also does some DI consulting. Her research stretched from laminitis to cartilage imaging to kangaroo ultrasonography and echocardiography, and some other weird and wonderfuls. She has promoted quite a few MSc, MMedVet and doctoral students, and has presented at many national and international congresses globally. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters. She was on the ECVDI exam committee, the ECVDI RIVDI committee, and is outgoing chair of the ACVR’s Consensus Statement Committee. She was the Southern African representative of the IVRA. She is still an associate editor of VetRad and Ultrasound. She has been involved with the South African Equine Veterinary Association since 1987, as a presenter, as an executive committee member and as a co-leader and organiser of the DI Quiz. She was joint winner of the SAVA Clinical Award, in 1992, individual winner of the same in 1999, and was awarded ‘’The Spirit of SAEVA’’ award in February 2026.
