Prof. Alexander (dan) TUCKER
United Kingdom
EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Porcine Health Management
I am presently Professor of Veterinary Public Health at the University of Cambridge Department of Veterinary Medicine. My research focuses on the control of infectious diseases that threaten food chain security, specifically through the application of new molecular technologies to entrenched endemic diseases of livestock that drive antibiotic use. I have published widely in the area of swine disease research and also in xenotransplantation safety and collaborate with 16 institutions in 10 different countries. In addition to this research profile I maintain an active teaching and clinical veterinary interest – I am a UK Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Specialist in Pig Medicine, and I am also accredited as a specialist in pig health management by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS). The RCVS elected me to Fellowship (FRCVS) in recognition of meritorious contribution to clinical practice in 2024. I have provided in situ veterinary consultancy services in most major pig producing countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Finally, I am a member of the following UK government committees that underpin national policy: the UK Department of Health’s Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP), The UK Department of Health’s Working Group on Xenotransplantation, and the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency’s Pig Expert Group. I was a member of the UK Food Standards Agency’s Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF) – latterly as Deputy Chair, for 10 years until 2024.
